Joseph Bryan DeTiere, 73, of Fayetteville, NC, took his final breath surrounded by loved ones and listening to Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC.
Joseph was born October 4, 1950, in St. Paul, MN, to the late Elmer Francis DeTiere and Marie Virginia Stuyvenberg DeTiere. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Samarng DeTiere; four dedicated daughters: Parichat Huibsch, Suchada Hearne, Maliwan Steele, and Joanne DeTiere; two grandsons: Richard Burchfield Jr. & Alexander Huibsch: three great-grandchildren: Richard Burchfield III, Maximus Burchfield, and Marilyn Burchfield, three sons-in-law: Joseph Huibsch, Tom Hearne, & Richard Steele; and cousin, Karen Thomas of MI.
Joseph lived a life of service and sacrifice for his country and his family. To his country, Chief Warrant Officer 3 (US Army Ret) Joseph DeTiere enlisted in the US Army in 1971, where he served for 21 years. During that period, he provided intelligence and counterintelligence support to the Army and Special Operations Forces. He participated in multiple conflicts from Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, and Iraq, retiring in 1992. Notable assignments include: 1) Special Agent Defense Investigative Service in 1973, 2) Special Agent in Charge, Okinawa Field Office, Japan from 1979-1983, and 3) Intelligence Professional at 1st SFOD-D from 1988-1992. He continued service to country as a Department of the Army Government Civilian, serving as an Intelligence Professional working in assignments at the US Army Special Operations Command, Air Force Special Operations Command, and the Joint Special Operations Command, where he made 12 deployments to Afghanistan in support of JSOC Forces. He retired from Civil Service in 2014. He continued to work as an independent consultant to Northrup Grumman, providing instructor and training support to the SOF / Intel community.
To his wife he was a loyal and loving husband, always knowing when to stand in front of, right besides, or right behind his wife who in turn loved him fiercely. To his daughters he was the ultimate ‘girl-dad’ starting decades before that was a thing online. He taught and supported his girls to be strong-willed; never voiced judgement, only encouragement; and didn’t interfere with mistakes his girls may have made, but still always knew when one needed to be rescued. Joseph didn’t believe in human perfection. He once advised his youngest daughter that things like a sunset, a piece of art, and a song can be perfect; but a person cannot. To his family, he was perfect.
