About the Mission:
Col. Chester "Chet" Gordon Oehme, Jr., originally of Holden, MA, served his country faithfully and honorably in the United States Air Force retiring with over 30 years of service. During his service which included tours of duty in Vietnam, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal w/3 Devices, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Combat Readiness Medal, NDSM, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Air Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award w/Valor and the Army Good Conduct Medal. During his career has accrued over 10,000 flight hours, but his most defining assignment was commander fo the 56th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron during the Vietnam War. where he flew and orchestrated rescue missions in hostile territory around the country. He retired as base commander of Charleston Air Force Base.
