MMCM Richard John Brooks, U.S. Navy Retired, joined the Navy right after graduating from high school. Growing up in orphanages, he claimed the U.S. Navy as the only family he ever had.
On June 8, 1967, while in international waters off the coast of Egypt, the USS Liberty AGTR-5 was attacked by both the combined air and sea attack of the Israeli Military. The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two marines, and one civilian NSA employee), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship. At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 NM northwest of the Egyptian city of Arish.
Nearly crippling the ship in the attack, the actions of MMCM Richard Brooks helped prevent both further damage and the sinking of the ship. He directed damage control efforts and engineering orders to maintain headway on the ship. Being wounded in the attack, he demonstrated what an unselfish hero is, putting the lives of his shipmates and the condition of the ship above his own life. For those actions, he was awarded the Silver Star.
Additional awards earned by Master Chief Brooks include; A Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Medal, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
We will stage and prepare to set the Line for the Dignified Transfer of MMCM Brooks from the Funeral Home to the coach. We will render appropriate Honors and assist as pallbearers as needed.
